Donation made to Sikeston/Bootheel United Way by an individual is the largest in history

New Madrid, -- Last Thursday, April 9th, an area company CEO and President was recognized for making the largest donation by an individual in the history of one Southeast Missouri organization.

During a brief presentation at Noranda's New Madrid facility, Layle Kip Smith, CEO and President of Noranda Aluminum was recognized for making a donation of $10,000 in support of the Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way.

"As a youth, I had the privilege to personally benefit from a local community center which continues to be funded in part by the United Way," said Smith.

"I understand how important the United Way funding is to the mission of this organization and the agencies it supports. As a result, I am committed to Noranda's role in giving back to the community through the United Way."

The donation qualifies Smith for membership in the United Way Tocqueville Society, which is granted to individuals who contribute $10,000 or more to a member United Way.

The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions who have devoted time, talent, and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our communities' most serious issues.

The New Madrid smelter and its employees are the largest contributors to the Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way giving more than $100,000 to the Southeast Missouri organization in the past three years. The Noranda Aluminum Corporation has donated more than $750,000 to local United Ways since 2011.
