God's Faithfulness

Thursday, May 14, 2015

The Bible says in Lamentations 3:22-23, "It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." Jeremiah wrote these words during a very dark time in Israel's history. The armies of Babylon had invaded and destroyed Judah and Jerusalem. Because God's people had continued in their idolatry and other sins and had ignored the Lord's warnings through His prophets God finally brought judgment upon His people.

This judgment was terrible indeed. Homes were leveled, businesses destroyed, and even the Temple in Jerusalem was burned to the ground. Lives were lost and the young people were deported as slaves into a distant land. The first deportation was the time that Daniel and his friends were carried into Babylon. But in spite of this terrible judgment God made a promise to His prophet Jeremiah that there was hope for Judah's future.

After some long years of discipline and judgment God would allow a small remnant to return and rebuild the city of Jerusalem. It was this promise that led Jeremiah to write these comforting words. Just like Jeremiah we can praise God for His amazing faithfulness and endless mercies that cause Him to show love and mercy upon His children even when they rebel against Him. God is faithful. Even though we are sinners by nature and choice He in mercy provides for us love and compassion fresh and new each morning. Yesterday is gone forever but today is a new start. Thank God for His new mercies this morning by proclaiming loudly with Jeremiah, "O Lord, great is your faithfulness!" Remember that God loves you and so does First Baptist Church.
