Milk donation helps food bank fill "crucial need"
SIKESTON -- The Southeast Missouri Food Bank in Sikeston received 500 gallons of milk Tuesday as part of an 11,000-gallon donation in June for Dairy Month.
"We will distribute that out to our food pantries who are member agencies," said Missy Rice, agency relations and program director for the Southeast Missouri Food Bank. "Feeding American and Prairie Farms did some research and found milk was a needed item but not a donated -- if someone is going to donate to a food pantry, they are not going to donate milk. It's not an easy item to donate."
Rice said this isn't the only assistance providing milk Prairie Farms has offered.
"For the past couple of months they've' been sending coupons good for one gallon of milk," she said.
The 11,000 gallons of milk -- 176,000 servings -- to be distributed to 22 food banks in the Midwest in a step in the right direction, Rice said, but area residents who do want to help with much-needed milk donations can now do so with a mouse click or text message.
