Malden scores 80 in win over Dexter

DEXTER (SMNS) -- The Dexter Bearcats remained within striking distance for nearly three quarters but ultimately came up short in its bid to become the first team to beat the Malden Green Wave in the regular season in the last two years Friday night.

Malden scored 11 touchdowns on its way to an 80-51 road win against Dexter. The 80 points is a school record for the Green Wave, overtaking the 78 points scored against Chaffee in 1970. The 80 points is also the most ever given up by a Bearcat team, surpassing the 76 points Malden scored against Dexter last season.

Nick Thompson paced Malden's offense with 18 carries for 222 yards. He rushed for three touchdowns.

Tyler Currie added had 11 carries for 51 yards. He also rushed for three touchdowns

Ethan Stevens had four rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns for Dexter. He had 32 carries for 239 yards and completed eight of 15 passes for 179 yards.

In the game, Stevens broke Dexter's school record for total yards (rushing/passing) with 2,921 yards, surpassing his brother Cody Stevens who held the record with 2,559 in 2011. He also broke the most points scored in a season record previously held by Matt Burnett with 154 in 2002.

Corbin Strong had a team-high nine tackles for Dexter. Tyler Stevenson added eight more tackles for the Bearcats.

Dexter (3-6) begins play in the Class 3, District 1 Tournament Friday. Dexter is the seventh seed and will play at second-seeded Park Hills Central.
