Van Buren holds off Puxico in consolation quarters at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD -- The 14th-seeded Van Buren Bulldogs pulled off the second upset of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament with a 62-47 win over No. 11 Puxico Monday during the consolation quarterfinals.

They jumped out to a 16-1 lead after one quarter, but was met with some resistance from the Indians in the second quarter.

Puxico's Levi Woods, who led all scorers with 19 points, scored eight points in the second quarter to trim Van Buren's lead to just four points. The Bulldogs eventually led 24-15 at halftime.

Van Buren's Matthew Schrontz and Riley Reed took control in the third quarter scoring 16 of their team's 18 points. Schrontz, who finished 17, and Riley, who scored 18 on the game, had nine and seven points respectively in the third quarter.

Van Buren went on to outscore Puxico 20-14 in the fourth to close out the win.

Puxico is eliminated from the tournament while Van Buren moves on to play No. 10 East Prairie in the consolation semifinals at 2:30 p.m., on Tuesday.
