Filing began last Tuesday for statewide and county offices

Eighth District Congressman, Jason Smith filed for re-election as a Republican Tuesday. Also filing on the GOP side were Todd Mahn of Desoto and Phillip Smith of Gatewood. Filing as a Libertarian was Jonathan Shell of Fredericktown.

State Senator Doug Libla of Poplar Bluff filed for re-election as a Republican, while Bill Burlison of Wardell filed as a Democratic candidate.

House District 150 State Rep. Andrew McDaniel of Deering filed for re-election as a Republican.

New Madrid County will have at least one primary race.

On the first day of filing George DeLisle, who currently serves as coroner, filed for re-election. Also filing was former coroner Jimmy McSpadden. Both filed as Democrats.

Filing as Democrats were incumbents, Sheriff Terry Stevens and Public Administrator Paula Scobey. Others who plan to seek countywide office on the Democratic ticket so far are Bobby Aycock Jr., who filed for the post of First District commissioner; Randall Brands, who filed for Second District commissioner; and Jacob Johnson, who is seeking the job of assessor.

Also Tuesday morning, 149th District State Rep. Don Rone of Portageville filed for re-election. Rone is a Republican.

Those planning to vote in the Aug. 2 primary election have until July 6 to register to vote.

A voter may register in person at their local county clerk's office, at a drivers licensing office while applying for or renewing a driver's license, at a designated state agency while the applicant is obtaining services from the agency, such as the Division of Family Services or WIC or at a library, according to the Missouri Secretary of State's office.

When registering in person, the applicant is required to present a form of photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport or university ID, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or other government document that contains the voter's name and address or an ID from a local election authority.

A voter can also register to vote by mail by completing a post card voter registration application. The application can requested from the local election authority or from the Missouri Secretary of State's website.

Filing ends March 29.
