The starting point of a meaningful response to something tragic is that we are broken by it. In Nehemiah's tears and mourning over the city of Jerusalem, he was letting go of the guard around his heart and allowing the truth to tap into the core of his being. After receiving the vision from God to rebuild the city walls, he takes time for two things that are essential to all of us when called by God. Scripture records Nehemiah hearing about Jerusalem in the month of Kislev, but when he first conveyed his concerns to the king it was in the month of Nisan. Kislev is the equivalent of our September and Nisan of January, so there was a four month gap between hearing the news and conveying it. In the interim, Nehemiah said, "I mourned, I fasted, I prayed before the God of heaven."
