Spring forward: Change clocks, check smoke alarms

Saturday, March 12, 2016

SIKESTON -- Sunday isn't just a day to "spring" clocks forward for daylight saving time, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety urges the public to check their smoke alarms, too.

On Sunday, as clocks are moved ahead one hour to start daylight saving time, Capt. Jim McMillen suggests residents change the batteries in their home smoke detectors, too.

"It is a fact ... most fatal fires occur at night. A smoke alarm in your home can provide an early warning that could save your life in a fire," McMillen said.

Each year nearly 4,000 Americans die in fires and approximately 16,000 are injured. At least 80 percent of fires in the United States occur in the home, said Sherry F. Nelson, human development specialist with University of Missouri Extension. The National Fire Protection Association reports that roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms that are not working, Nelson added.

Both McMillen and Nelson offered tips to provide families with protection:

According to McMillen, smoke alarms should be installed in all sleeping rooms and hallways that lead to sleeping areas.

"Put them on each level of your home, including the basement," he suggested. "You can contact Sikeston DPS to have any questions answered about your smoke detectors or if you are unsure about placement in your home."
