An 18-wheeler caught fire early Sunday afternoon on Interstate 55 near the 49 mile marker. The billowing black smoke prompted officials to close the southbound lanes, rerouting traffic through New Madrid for several hours. According to personnel at the scene, the tractor-trailer rig was heading south on I-55 when the driver noticed smoke in his cab. Shortly after pulling over, the rig burst into flames. The driver was not injured and officials noted the truck's load was not hazardous. - SEMO News Service/submitted photo
