FREEDOM IN CHRIST

There comes a moment in our lives when we have to be confronted with the truth about ourselves and the truth about our sin, because this is our primary obstacle in life. There is a distinction between 'sin' and 'sins'. Sins are what we do. Sin is our fallen nature that is the cause of those sins. So any sin (materially, ethically, psychologically) are all symptoms that derive from our sinful nature. The fundamental goal of the ministry of Christ is to address this problem of sin. Before Jesus was even born, an angel appeared to Joseph and said, "You are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins" (Mathew 1:21).This is the mission statement of Jesus, His job description - to save His people from their sins. After His resurrection, Jesus talked to His disciples about the purpose of His death and resurrection, saying, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations" (Luke 24:46-47). This is the principal message of the Gospel. There are many secondary benefits to the Gospel which may be physical, ethical, or psychological in nature, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not primarily about that. It is about dealing with sin, because it is sin which separates us from God, and the whole purpose of the Gospel is to reconcile us to God.
