Sikeston Elks give two reasons to celebrate the Fourth
SIKESTON -- It's Sikeston Elks Lodge 25th anniversary as sponsors of Sikeston's fireworks display and viewers are in for a surprise.
"This year is going to be bigger and better," said Elks Lodge 2319 Exalted Ruler Wayne Smith, about the display which will begin at dusk at the Sikeston Sports Complex.
Sikeston Elks Lodge first hosted a fireworks display in 1991 at the old Elks Lodge off U.S. Highway 60. There was no sponsorship for a fireworks display before that.
"We wanted to do something for the whole community to enjoy," said Bitsy Haglar, the firework chairman of Elks Lodge.
A couple changes were made in the last 25 years.
Members of the Lodge used to make out-of-pocket purchases, spending about $40-50 on merchandise. Now thousands of dollars are donated from Sikeston, Miner, city organizations, businesses and individuals.
"We're very appreciative for those that have contributed to this tradition," said Smith.
