Mississippi County: Moore holds off Douglas in sheriff primary

Wednesday, August 3, 2016

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Those eager to see the results of the Democratic sheriff race of Mississippi County in Tuesday's primary election had a bit more of a wait than they bargained for.

The voting machine had trouble reading some of the ballots, so Mississippi County residents waited patiently for the announcement of which Democratic sheriff will be on the ballot this November.

After a two-hour wait, County Clerk Junior Delay, announced the winner -- Sheriff Keith Moore who will once again take the seat for the Democratic ticket, winning 781 to 647 against his opponent, Brent Douglas.

Delay said the machine was experiencing errors due to duplicated absentee ballots, adding that he saw Charleston experience 25 to 30 duplicates.

The voting machine "only recognized so many rows," Delay said, "it kept saying 'error, invalid row count.'"

Moore will go head-to-head against the Republican candidate Cory Hutcheson, who ran unopposed and received 697 votes. It was also the only opposed Democratic race in the county.

For the rest of the county's Democratic tickets, all unopposed, included the following votes: incumbent Mitch Pullen, First District commissioner, 496; incumbent Darrell Jones, Second District commissioner, 712; incumbent Lisa Finley Norton, assessor, 1,196; and incumbent Terry A. Parker, coroner, 1,230.

The Republican ballot had no contested races. Votes included: Jeffrey Hall, First District County commissioner, 274; Dwight C. White, assessor, 650; and Julie Summers-Day, public administrator, 777.

Hall will take on Pullen in the November general election while Norton will oppose White for assessor.
