Concerns of truck traffic on Haynes Drive discussed
Not a whole lot of action happened in Monday night's monthly meeting of the Portageville City Council. There was however, several items of discussion.
Alderman Jessie James said, "Haynes Drives is still having issues with big trucks making the loop at Haynes Drive which is creating several pot holes. There is a sign that reads, "No Trucks Allowed" and they are still using the road."
Mayor Floyd Simmons said that he would alert the police department and have them to talk with the truckers about the havoc being created on the Haynes Drive loop.
James also mentioned that the sewer may be back up and now flowing, Some citizens claiming sewage is backing up into their homes. The Mayor suggest to James that he talk with the sewer department and take them to Haynes to help assess the situation.
Animal Control officer Tammy Wyman reported that she is still waiting on a bid for the cat shelter, and briefly discussed the cost of dog food. Simmons suggested talking to the distributor to try to get a better price per pound than what they are paying for now.
Some of the streets will be getting a new layer of asphalt near the end of August. The streets and places that will receive a fresh one and a half, (1 1/2") inch overlay include: West Fifth Street, from McCrate St. to MacArthur St.; West 6th st. from MacArthur to Huffman; West 7th St. from MacArther to Huffamn; Red Building parking lot at Meatte Memorial Park; and Haynes Drive, beginning next to the Chinese Restaurant, the shipping area behind the restaurant, and the loop of Haynes Drive.
To bring the Council up to speed on the drainage project, he as filed suite against both the contractor and the engineering firm.
Last year, the new drainage system that was put in place but has collapsed in several places. As of now it remains in litigation between the engineering firm and the contractor as to who will pay to have the problem corrected. It cost the city of Portageville about $600,000 to have the new drainage pipes installed. It will cost about $800,000 to dig up and replace. The Steve Pliemann Company of Oak Ridge, Mo are the contractors and Smith and Co. is the engineering firm.
Clarification-
Lastly to clarify, the City Council approved two new members to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Eric Williams and Jared Brands. They are not on the Park Board as reported in last week's newspaper.
