Dexter struggles on the road against Ste. Genevieve
STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- The Dexter Bearcats had a rough beginning to the Kevin Goltra era Friday night, falling on the road to Ste. Genevieve 35-6.
Goltra, in his first game as head coach of the Bearcats, watched as his new power running attack struggled to gain yards against the stout Dragon defense. Dexter managed just four first downs and 79 total yards in the game, scoring their only touchdown in the third quarter on a Payton Tinnin 13-yard run.
Ste. Genevieve had little trouble moving the ball against the Bearcat defense, gaining 354 yards.
Dragons quarterback Brandon Hinson connected with Luke Brewster for two touchdowns in the second quarter as Ste. Genevieve led 14-0 at the half.
A Camden Roe 2-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter put the Dragons up 20-0 before Tinnin's score tightened the gap.
Gabe Greminger and Wade Hahn scored on touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to put the game away for Ste. Genevieve.
The Dexter defense did force four turnovers in the game including three interceptions. Two of the picks were courtesy of sophomore Nate Gargas with the other coming from linebacker Bo McMullin.
Dexter (0-1) will host Poplar Bluff (1-0) Friday night at 7 p.m.
