United Way in week 7 of campaign; well short of goal

Monday, October 31, 2016

SIKESTON -- Approximately two months away from the end of the campaign, the Sikeston/ Bootheel Area United Way is about 25 percent of the way toward its goal.

According to local officials, the campaign has collected $15,800 in actual donations and has $4,600 in pledged donations as the campaign rolled into week 7. This is approximately 24 percent of the campaign's $85,000 goal.

"Uncertain economic conditions, lost jobs due to business and manufacturing plant closings, and job reductions certainly make this a unique and challenging campaign," said Shawnna G. Gerding, executive director of the Sikeston/ Bootheel Area United Way. "In these difficult economic times, it is anticipated that the need for support and services provided by the local 16 United Way partner agencies will expand, including family members, friends and neighbors who never imagined that necessary support and services would impact them."

Agencies the Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way helps to fund include Bootheel Counseling Services and Family Medical Clinic, Boy Scouts, Delta Area Blind, Foster Grandparent Program, Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, Hands of Hope Partners, House of Refuge, Kenny Rogers Children's Center, Nutrition Centers of Southeast Missouri (Chaffee, East Prairie, Sikeston, New Madrid and Portageville), Scott County Transit, Sikeston Depot Museum and the YMCA of Southeast Missouri.

Gerding noted that 99 cents of every dollar donated stays right in the area to assist the local organizations and programs. She added the local organization does pay a 1 percent membership fee to United Way Worldwide which goes toward providing services such as United Way 2-1-1 Resource Information Hotline and the FamilyWize Prescription Discount Program to all individuals in all communities.

The deadline to make a donation is Dec. 31.

Donations may be sent to the Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way Office, P.O. Box 536, Sikeston, MO, 63801. For those individuals who have a PayPal account, donations may be made through PayPal at PayPal.Me/bootheeluw
