A Christian Citizen's Duty
We enjoy the freedom and right to vote in a government by the people and for the people. According to the Bible governments are set up by God as His ministers "to execute wrath on him who practices evil" (Rom 13:4). Jesus understood that Pilate only had authority because it came from God. He said to Pilate, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above" (Jn 19:11).
When the Pharisees tried to entangle Jesus in his talk they asked Him, "Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" (Mat 22:17). Jesus asked them to show Him the tax money and He said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" (Mat 22:20). They said, "Caesar's" (22:21). Jesus said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Who is our Caesar? Our Caesar is a constitutional government by the people and for the people. What do we owe our Caesar? We as Christian Citizens have a responsibility to participate in a republic of democratically elected officials. If God's people choose not to vote for candidates that most closely represent the values that honor the Lord, then they relegate to those who do not know and love our God to elect candidates of their choice.
The Bible reveals God's position on some of the issues facing voters in this election. God has a position on life. David wrote in Ps 139:13-14, "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;" Every life is precious to God whether inside the womb or outside the womb. Christians should vote Pro-life in every election!
God has a position on marriage. In Mark 10:6-8, Jesus said, "But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh." The Bible teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman till death do them part. Christians should vote for candidates that will do everything in their power to reverse the Supreme Court's decision legalizing homosexual marriage.
There are many important issues in this election. None are as important as these. If America is not right on these issues it will not matter what we are right on. God will not bless a nation that so disregards His word. America is not right with God today.
The most important thing that Christian Citizens can do is to pray. We desperately need revival in the church and America. 2 Chronicles 7:14 reminds us, "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." God bless you and remember that God loves you and so does First Baptist Church.
