Sikeston man dies in accident

SIKESTON - A Sikeston man has died following an accident late Friday.

Gerald D. Summers, 21, was pronounced dead at 1:33 a.m. Saturday by Dr. Kevin Hammond at Saint Francis Medical Center's emergency room. Summers' death is the 67th for the Troop E area this year, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at 11 p.m. Friday on Scott County Road 538, two miles northeast of Sikeston, when a northbound car driven by Jerry L. Summers, 40, of Sikeston ran off the roadway. The Patrol reported Summers' vehicle struck a utility pole.

Gerald Summers was a passenger in the vehicle.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

A Sikeston man and a Chaffee woman were airlifted to hospitals following an accident at 12:33 p.m. Sunday in Stoddard County.

On Highway 60, one mile east of Route AH, Morgan T. Shaw, 21, of Sikeston was driving eastbound. The Patrol reported Shaw's vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting passengers, Derek W. Masters, 23, and Jerricah L. Whitmore, 23.

Masters had serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Whitmore, who was also seriously injured, was taken by air ambulance to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Shaw received moderate injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center.

A driver was injured in an accident at 6:07 a.m. Sunday on Highway 80, 200 feet east of Route B in Mississippi County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol stated Janice D. Paz, 47, of East Prairie was driving east when her vehicle went off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle then struck a ditch and overturned.

Moderately injured, Paz was taken by air ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center for treatment.
