SD ROUNDUP: Portageville topped by hosts in championship bracket of Malden Invitational, NMCC finishes 2nd in consolation bracket

MALDEN, Mo. -- The Portageville baseball team lost the championship bracket of the Malden Invitational Tournament Saturday after losing the deciding game to the hosts.

The Bulldogs (10-4) scored four runs in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game but it wasn't even as the Green Wave held on 7-6 in a time-limit shortened six innings.

Ian Torrey took the loss on the mound after two innings. He allowed four runs on one hit and four walks while striking out one on 45 pitches.

Bailey Cook pitched the remaining three innings giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out one. He also led the Bulldogs with two hits, including a double.

Nick Allred and Alex Riddle chipped in doubles as well.

Tye Miller picked up the pitching win for Malden. He pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up four runs on three hits and six walks while striking out four on 98 pitches.

Conner Murphy earned the save in the final 1 2/3 innings giving up two runs on four hits.

Dee Triplett led Malden with two hits.

Malden (8-7) defeated Bernie 6-5 in the first game.

Portageville took down Bernie 11-8 in another time-limit shortened six innings.

Allred earned the win against the Mules after 5 1/3 innings and 90 pitches. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out two.

Cook got the save getting the final two outs.

Allred had two hits for Portageville. Torrey added a double.

Consolation bracket

MALDEN, Mo. -- The New Madrid County Central Eagles baseball team finished second in the consolation bracket of the Malden Invitational Tournament after splitting two games on Saturday.

The Eagles defeated Bloomfield 13-7 in five innings and lost to bracket champion Senath-Hornersville 11-7.

NMCC shot out to an 8-1 lead after the first inning against the Wildcats.

Gavin Bond led the Eagles' 14-hit attack with three hits, including a double and a triple. Jacob Keene also had three hits, including two doubles. Both Bond and Keene had two RBIs.

Chase Silman earned the pitching win after four innings on the mound. He allowed seven runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven on 92 pitches.

NMCC (6-6) let a two-run lead slip away in the final three innings against Senath, who scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Silman had three hits, including a triple while Marsh had three hits and a double. Keene doubled as well.

Jared Reed was the losing pitcher after five innings. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one on 93 pitches.

Senath took down Bloomfield 6-2 to claim the bracket.
