Imitators of God

Thursday, April 12, 2018

In Ephesians 5:1, the apostle Paul writes, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children” (English Standard Version). The word “Therefore” refers back to the previous verse. There Paul urges us “to be kind to one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Eph 4:32). We ought to forgive others because God has forgiven us. We ought to be kind to others because God is kind to us.

As Christians we ought to imitate our heavenly Father in forgiveness and love, in fact, as beloved children of God we should always strive to imitate our heavenly Father in all aspects. One of the great glories of our heavenly Father is his forgiving love through Jesus Christ. This is particularly attractive in our eyes. This love is demonstrated towards us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Rom 5:8).

We, in turn, by the power of the indwelling Spirit make every effort to exhibit God’s love toward those who wrong us. This love testifies to the fact that God loves them and wants to forgive them through the shed blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is only through the death of Christ that God is able to forgive those who repent of their sin and trust Him as Lord and Savior of their lives.

If you have not trusted Jesus and His death as payment for your sin and received Him into your heart and life as Master and Lord, I invite you to do so right where you are. Simply acknowledge that you are a sinner and turn from sin and trust him as your Lord and Savior, knowing that He paid it all on the cross. His resurrection demonstrates that God accepts His sacrifice as full and final payment for the sins of the world. He forgives those who repent and believe and surrender their all to Him.

If you are a Christian I encourage you to apply Ephesians 5:1 to your life just as Paul expected the Christians in ancient Ephesus to apply it to their lives. Follow God as beloved children and be ye kind and tender hearted toward one another forgiving one another just as God forgave you in Christ. Allow others to see the love of God in and through your life. God bless you. Remember that God loves you and so does First Baptist Church.
