Under Obama, HUD was social experiment

Saturday, November 26, 2016

If all goes according to plan, Dr. Ben Carson will soon take over as Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Of all appointments announced thus far, this one is by far the most welcome news.

Under the Obama administration, HUD was the lead dog in advancing a social engineering agenda that posed nightmares for communities across the nation.

Obama was using HUD to force housing developments in areas to create a forced diversity agenda with no regard for local input.

And yet another Obama scheme including removing criminal background checks in determining those eligible for subsidized housing.

These executive actions were clearly designed to create the diverse economic neighborhoods that this administration so craves while overriding the sentiments and concerns from local communities.

Just to illustrate how mismanaged this federal agency has become under the Obama administration, last week an Inspector General's report said the financial accounting records from HUD are so incomplete, the agency cannot be accurately audited.

So you have a federal agency unable to account for hundreds of millions of dollars and yet, I strongly suspect you have heard nothing on this subject.

One "working paper" on potential HUD changes included the provision to construct any new public housing developments in "white affluent neighborhoods." And the federal concept would override any local zoning restrictions.

Rest assured, Dr. Carson will change the agenda moving forward for HUD and will restore the rule of law and the ability for local governments to control their own destiny.

There may be more focus on Secretary of State appointments or Secretary of Defense, but when it comes to local impact, few agencies carry the clout of HUD.

HUD's goal should remain providing safe and affordable housing for those in need and abandon their social engineering agenda.

In some ways, our recent election should have sent that message loud and clear to those in power.

Now we will wait to see if campaign promises result in concrete actions.
