NEW MADRID, Mo. — A Portageville man is facing multiple charges following two reported assaults.

According to online court records, Cody Gavin Haynes, 26, will be arraigned May 10 in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court before Judge Joshua Underwood on charges of first degree domestic assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Haynes was arraigned April 30 on charges of first degree assault, third degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon and is set to return to court May 10 on those charges.

New Madrid County Sheriff Department Sgt. Joshua Johnson wrote in the probable cause statement he was dispatched to investigate an assault on Five-O Drive near Portageville on April 27. At the scene, he met with three females, including one woman who had lacerations to the left side of her head and blood on her face, hair and shirt.

The woman told the officer that she and another female had come to the residence to pick up two other women because Haynes was angry. The woman said while the two women were getting their clothes from the residence, Haynes pulled up in his vehicle and demanded she leave.

One of the women who was at the house fled on foot and the other got into the car and the three women prepared to drive away.

Johnson wrote that the woman told him that “Haynes retrieved an aluminum baseball (bat) and struck the driver window . . . The baseball bat went through the window striking her on the left side of her head.”

The officer also noted another of the women received small lacerations to her right arm from the glass when it was broken. The third woman was uninjured but covered by broken glass, he added.

The deputy along with an officer from the Portageville Police Department located Haynes hiding under a shed near his vehicle. Johnson said he was given permission to search Haynes’ vehicle where he located an aluminum baseball bat.

During an interview, Haynes denied using the bat to break the window. He told the officer it was one of the women who had broken the window.

While en route to the assault Sunday Johnson reported he saw a woman walking along Highway 162. Johnson stated the woman appeared upset and scared.

The victim told the officer her boyfriend Cody Haynes “went ‘crazy’ and she ran away from him leaving her friends there at the residence,” Johnson wrote in a second probable cause statement.

He noted the victim had several stitches in her hairline. When asked about the stitches the woman said Haynes had hit her in the head with a black handgun on April 21.

The woman told the officer she woke up on April 21 and was hungry and had used Haynes’ car to go get something to eat. When she returned, she said, Haynes was upset stating she had taken too long to return home and jumped onto the hood of the vehicle while she was inside.

Haynes then went to another car and retrieved a handgun and began hitting the driver’s side window of the car occupied by the victim, Johnson stated in the probable cause.

A neighbor attempted to intervene and the two men began fighting. In an effort to stop the fight, the victim said she got out of the car and threw the keys to the vehicle at Haynes.

When she then attempted to flee in another vehicle, she told the officer that Haynes caught her and hit in the head with the black handgun.

A neighbor later drove her to the Portageville ambulance shed where she was transported to the Pemiscot Memorial Medical Center. She received seven stitches to close the head wound.

The victim told the officer she did not report the incident because she was afraid of Haynes.

When interviewed by the officer Haynes denied hitting the woman and stated he did not know how she got injured.

Bond is set at $25,000 cash only in each case with the condition Haynes have no contact with the victim.
