Watkins to speak at Sikeston MLK Jr. celebration
SIKESTON — The Sikeston Martin Luther King Jr. celebration activities will begin with a musical program at 5 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Green Memorial Church of God In Christ, 113 Clayton Ave., Sikeston.
The celebration continues with the motorcade parade lineup beginning at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, 127 W. Trotter St., in Sikeston.
The annual celebration program will follow the motorcade parade at noon at the Cornerstone Baptist Church Family Life Center. This year’s theme is “Dreamers Unite: Dream, Believe, Achieve.
The keynote presenter will be Julian Watkins, executive director of the Southeast Missouri Red Cross. Watkins is a nonprofit executive and self-proclaimed “recovering” attorney. A native of Cairo, Ill., Watkins has degrees in business and a law degree from the University of Illinois. He spent several years as an attorney and high school basketball coach before finding purpose in the service of others as an executive with the American Red Cross. He recently spoke on the TEDx stage and continues to spread his message of hope and love by speaking to students, young adults and corporations.
TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
