Thursday, March 28, 2019

CHARLESTON, Mo. — Voters in East Prairie will elect two school board members while also deciding on Proposition Eagle in the April 2 election in Mississippi County.

Voters in the East Prairie R-2 School District will choose two board members from a pool of six candidates. Those vying for the two, three-year spots on the board are: Carlin Bennett, David “Brad” Kenedy, Andrew Ambrose, Sarah-Lee Oliver Archie, Cody Finley Archie and Bryan Mainord.

A $7.5 million bond issue known as Proposition Eagle is also garnering plenty of attention from East Prairie voters. If passed, the bond will provide funds for the site development, construction, equipping and furnishing of Phase One of a new elementary building while improving safety and security district-wide and demolishing some existing buildings due to structural concerns. If funds are available, then the district would begin Phase Two of a new elementary building and complete other remodeling and repair improvements.

If the proposition is approved, the adjusted debt service levy of the school district is estimated to increase 55 cents per $100 of assessed valuation of real and personal property, increasing from 35 cents to 90 cents per $100.

Also in East Prairie, Kevin Mainord is running unopposed for mayor while Mary Anne Mainord is running unopposed for city collector. Both terms are for two years. Joey King is also unopposed for a two-year term as alderman in Ward 1 while Jennifer Grissom is unopposed for a two-year term as alderman in Ward 2. The principal and interest of the revenue bonds will be payable solely from the revenues derived by the city from the operation of its combined waterworks and sewerage system, including all future extensions and improvements.
