SIKESTON — Robert W. Hays, age 88, passed away Aug, 31. 2019, at the Missouri State Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
He was born March 11, 1931, in Paris, Ark., to the late James W. and Edna Brotherton Hays.
He was a member of the Shady Acres Church of Christ and had served in the United States Air Force for 22 years before retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant; he was also a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service for 20 years.
On Dec. 24, 1951, he married Mary Etta (Grady) Hays, who survives of the home in Sikeston, Missouri.
Other survivors include: two sons and one daughter, Steven Hays of Sikeston, Laura (Dan) Moore of St. Louis and David (Lois) Hays of Sikeston; five grandchildren and their spouses, Leanne (Jed) Payne, Laine Hosey, Scott Hays, Tyson Hosey, and Lindsey (Ryne) Mitchell which Robert and Mary raised as their own; and nine great-grandchildren, Brock Hays, Blake Hays, Ella Gambling, Logan Mitchell, Tessa Gambling, Miles Payne, Ruby Gambling, Kai Payne and Jordyn Mitchell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Hays; and one granddaughter, Kristen Hays; three brothers, Ethel, Everett, James (Merle); and three sisters, Ilah Vines, Georgia Davidson, Mildred Hays.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 5 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Shady Acres Church of Christ in Sikeston with Johnny Hester officiating.
Burial will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, Missouri, with full military honors.
Active pallbearers will be: Keith Olbricht, Steve Howell, James Price, Gene Hosey, Marion Pearson and David DeHart.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Jerry Smith, Bill (Cousin Carl) Anderson, Rick Hays, Norman (Buck) Grantham and Carl Lambert.
