Nathan Gunther Jr.
KEWANEE, Mo. — Nathan Gunther Jr., age 95, a resident of the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, passed away Oct. 8, 2019.
He was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Kirkwood Springs, Ky., the only child of Nath and Cecillia Capps Gunther.
Nathan moved with his parents to Pemiscot County in 1936 and he graduated from Wardell High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations, he was a retired farmer and a retiree of Noranda Aluminum.
On Sept. 14, 1946, Nathan married his high school sweetheart, Betty Jean Rinker, at Hayti. She preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 2012.
He is survived by one son, Mike Gunther (Maggie) of Dixon; one daughter, Mary Jane Schneider (Herschel) of East Prairie; one son-in-law, Lynn Akins of Sikeston; five grandchildren, Brant Gunther (Kacie) of Springfield, Alison Gunther of Scott City, LaSondra Giardina (Giuseppe) of Pueblo, Colo., Ashleigh Schneider of Stuart, Fla., and Erin Schneider of St. Louis; and one great-grandchild, Woody Gunther of Springfield.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Akins.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery at Bernie, with full military honors.
