Voters will choose school board representatives in April election

Thursday, January 30, 2020

SIKESTON - Voters in many school districts across the Bootheel have an array of candidates to select to represent them when they go to the polls April 7. However, others won’t have to cast a ballot at all because state law does not require an election if number of candidates equals the openings unless they have an additional issue on the ballot.

Sikeston R-6 is one of those exceptions.

Only three people filed to fill the three three-year terms open on the Sikeston R-6 School District School Board. Chad Bles and Aaron Boyce sought re-election and Ben Alcorn put his name in to take the place of Kyle Alcorn, who is currently a member of the board. However, the district’s patrons will also decide a bond issue so will see the board members listed on their ballots.

With two people filed for the two openings on the Scott County Central Board, there is no need for an election. Robert Cook and Paul A. Johnson filed for the two three-year terms.

There are six candidates vying for the three three-year openings on the Kelly School Board. Along with the three incumbents, David Brashear, who currently serves as the board’s president, Kellie Bridges, the board treasurer, and and board member Shane Washburn, seeking election are Jeremy Wade, Darrin Blunt and Jennifer Candy Ward.

In the Charleston School District, voters will select three board members for three-year term and fill a two-year unexpired term. Seeking election to the three-year terms are Matthew Morrow, Angela Duenne, Ervin Williams, Preston Moore and Alana Mills, who currently is a member of the board. Running unopposed for the two-year unexpired term is Evan Burke, who was appointed earlier to fill the position until the April 7 election.

Only the three incumbents filed for the three openings on the East Prairie School Board. Unopposed in their bids for the three-year terms are Dr. David Dahlebeck, Claire Poley and Dr. Steven Douglas.

There are four candidates on the ballot for the three three-year terms open on the Gideon School Board. The candidates are: incumbents Kevin Lawrence and Eddy Moore along with Darren Martin and Rodney Adams.

It is only the incumbents, Danny Parker, Jon Palmer and Kay Rebstock, who sought election to the New Madrid County R-1 School Board.

Also the Portageville School Board’s current members, Mark Moody, Patty Johnson and Jerrett Warren, filed for the three-year terms open on the board.

The same was true in the Risco School District with incumbents, Chuck Pipkin, Mark McDowell and Josh Stephens, filing for three-year terms.

Patrons in the Dexter School District will elect three people to fill three-year terms on the board. Candidates are: Ronald Glaus, Saren Demaree, incumbent Benjamin Worley, Janet Bell, and BobbiKay Parker

Richland’s three current school board members filed for re-election and with no opponents, there is no need for an election. Clinton Corlew, Kevin Evans and Jeremy Conne will serve three-year terms.
