SIKESTON — On Saturday, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson directed the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Director Dr. Randall Williams to order statewide social distancing beginning Monday.

Individuals “shall avoid eating or drinking at restaurants, bars, or food courts; provided, however, that the use of drive-thru, pickup, or delivery options is allowed throughout the duration of this Order,” according to the news release issued by Parson.

“As the COVID-19 crisis continues to develop, this is a critical step in protecting the health and safety of Missourians,” Parson said in the release. “I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for all citizens to practice social distancing and abide by this order, which is backed by intense deliberation and knowledge.”

The order also says individuals should not visit nursing homes, long-term care facilities, retirement homes, or assisted living homes unless to provide critical assistance. The order does not prohibit schools from providing child care and food and nutritional services for those children that qualify.

The order took effect Monday and will last until 12:01 a.m. April 6 unless extended by Williams.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, was up to 183 Monday afternoon, according to statistics released by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Service. There have been three deaths in Missouri.

With Parson’s order, a number of local businesses and services in Sikeston have made temporary changes.

The Sikeston Housing Authority issued a statement that they will intend to close this week, and staff will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic with the offices possibly closed longer.

The release said all service calls would be limited to emergency situations, as determined by the maintenance staff. All tenants should make all scheduled payments on time, utilizing a money order, and placing it in the drop box located at the office.

Also, Sikeston BMU canceled the scheduled hydrant flushing scheduled for this week.
