Spurlin Nelson
SIKESTON — Spurlin “Dick” Nelson, age 94, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Missouri.
He was born March 1, 1926, in Sikeston, son of the late Walter 'Dick' and Ethel Duke Nelson.
He was a member of North Acres General Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II and was a self-employed businessman before retiring.
On Sept. 24, 1948, he married Virginia Grimes Nelson, she survives of the home in Sikeston.
Other survivors include: two sons, Spurlin “Dick” (Sherry) Nelson Jr. and Danny (Christy) Nelson all of Sikeston; one sister, Wanda Scarbrough of Sikeston; five grandchildren, Matt Nelson, Jon Nelson, Ben Nelson, Adam Nelson and Blake Nelson; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 10 siblings, Orville Nelson, Marvin Nelson, Bob Nelson, Ladoska “Dock” Johnson, Elsie Wyatt, Geneva Nelson, Mergie Johnson, Violet Shelby, Walter Nelson and Wallace “Cotton” Nelson.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at noon at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. There will be full military honors provided by the Missouri Honor Guard.
A private burial will be at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.
