Anglers hook fish, honors at local events

NEW MADRID, Mo. — Anglers of all ages converged on New Madrid, Oct. 3, to try their luck in the local waters.

Every youngster participating in the Youth Fishing Rodeo, sponsored by the Riverbend Ducks Unlimited Chapter, came away a winner. The 70 participants each received a T-shirt and a fishing pole when they signed in.

There were also plenty of fish caught and taken home.

Charlee Beth Faulkner earned the honor for catching the most fish. She also won the prize for most fish by weight.

There was a tie for the biggest fish. Welton Tanner and Chris Villarreal earned that honor.

Also, Oliver Tanner and Shea Wallace tied for the honor of littlest fish caught.

The Twisted Cat Tournament featured 128 anglers who pulled in a total of 1,899.50 pounds of catfish from the Mississippi River.

The team of Daryl Masingale, Jason Masingale, and David Coughlin from Arkansas earned first place with a total catch of 120.8 pounds. They also landed the big fish honors with a catfish weighing in at 58.14 pounds. The win earned them $4,780 in addition to a $200 gift certificate.

The $2,000 second place prize went to David Shipman and Larry Muse, who pulled in a three-fish catch weighing 91.36 pounds narrowly edging out Cary Long and Adam Bond, who earned third place and $1,050, with their fish weighing in at 90.99 pounds.

Others placing and winning cash were:

• Fourth place and $875, Ronnie Strickland and Michael Parham, 86.06 pounds;

• Fifth place and $600, Hunter Jones, Chris Stout, and Ryder Jones, 80.42 pounds;

• Sixth place and $300, Chris Brinegar and Troy Phillips, 77.85 pounds and

• Seventh place and $200, Joe Hardy, Barry Wilson, and Fonzie Malikham, 75.32 pounds.

The New Madrid Twisted Cat Tournament was the final competition of the season before the championship tournament scheduled for later this month at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Both the Youth Fishing Rodeo and the Twisted Cat Tournament are annual events conducted as part of the New Madrid Chamber of Commerce and New Madrid’s Fall Festival.
