Nine area residents die from COVID-19

Nine area residents who were positive with COVID-19 have died since Friday while some local counties are seeing a significant increase in positive cases.

The Scott County Health Department reported one death and 150 new positive cases since Friday. The death is the 20th in the county since the pandemic began in March.

The health department reported 40 new positives on Friday and 40 more on Saturday with 20 new positives on Sunday and 25 both Monday and Tuesday. As of Tuesday afternoon, there 285 active cases in the county.

A Mississippi County resident who was positive with COVID-19 has also died.

The Mississippi County Health Department reported the death on Tuesday afternoon, making the seventh resident to die from the virus since the pandemic began in March.

The county has 15 new cases since Friday and the number of active cases has increased from 33 to 38 with 27 confirmed and 11 probable.

The New Madrid County Health Department also reported a death, making nine since March. There are currently 49 active cases in the county, down 25 from Friday.

The Stoddard County Public Health Center reported 53 cases over the weekend with an additional 30 cases on Monday. The county currently has 187 active cases with 18 people who have died since March.

The Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center reported sixth death attributed to COVID-19 on Tuesday. Three individuals were in their 90s while two were in their 70s and one in their 80s. There have now been 40 deaths in the county.

The county has 480 active cases, down 92 from Monday.
