SIKESTON — Two races have emerged for positions on the Sikeston City Council as filing ended on Tuesday.

There were three positions available as Mayor Steven Burch, Councilman Ward 2 Gerald Settles and Councilman Ward 3 Karen Evans all termed out.

Greg Turnbow and John Graham will face off for mayor in the April election while David Teachout will run unopposed for the Ward 3 council position.

A primary election will be needed in Ward 2 as (Charles) Vest Baker, Pershard D. Owens and James V. Crowe Sr. all filed for the position.

A special city council meeting will be held at noon Friday to pass an emergency ordinance calling for a primary election on Feb. 2, 2021, to determine which two of the three candidates in Ward 2 will be on the ballot for the general election.

Sikeston City Clerk Rhonda Council said Scott County has to get the ballot information by Nov. 24, which is why the emergency ordinance will be passed on Friday.

The general election will be held on April 6, 2021.
