BENTON - A Benton area man is charged with possession of child pornography. Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said the charges are a result of an investigation that was conducted after receiving information that Derek K. Mims, 40, had images depicting children reasonably believed to be under the age of 18 in sexual poses and / or having sexual contact with other persons on his cell phone...

SIKESTON - A Sikeston man remains in custody for the reported rape of a 5-year-old. Gabriel Dron Mitchell, 20, is charged with first degree statutory rape, sexual intercourse with a child less than 14 years of age. He is being held in the Scott County Jail in lieu of a $150,000 cash only bond...

BENTON -- Tara L. Mason of Scott City will serve as the new recorder of deeds for Scott County. Mason was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon Thursday to fill the vacancy created by the death last week of Recorder Tom Dirnberger. A Democrat, Mason was the senior deputy clerk in the recorder's office since 2002. Prior to that, she was assistant director and a preschool teacher at a daycare center in Benton. She is a graduate of Oran R-3 High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University...

Sikeston Public Safety officers extinguish a structure fire at a residence at 1307 McDougal Thursday morning. When officers arrived at the fire at 8 a.m. they found a one story residence with smoke coming from the roof. The fire, predominately confined to a bedroom, was quickly extinguished a short time later. An investigation conducted by a DPS fire investigator revealed the fire originated in the bedroom of an 8-year-old boy who had been playing with a lighter...
