Well, the story I've been waiting to write since the ultrasound nurse detected an extra appendage will have to wait at least another week, as my son and I are continuing our time-honored tradition of not shooting deer. The good news is, our sorrowful story is getting out and my friends in the hunting community are stepping up and inviting us to their farms, where we subsequently shut down all deer activity for the next 24 hours...

Area municipal and school board races underway

Filings for local school board and municipal elections began last Tuesday morning, and some of the races are already being contested. The filing period will run through 5 p.m., Jan. 20. Individuals who are interested in filing for seats on the Portageville School Board may do so in the office of the board secretary, at the administration building. While the filing process is simple, some forms must be notarized, so appropriate ID cards are required...

Portageville Jaycees are at it again

SRG Global, in Portageville, has been collecting toys throughout the month of December for the Portageville Jaycees, as they distribute Christmas gifts to children in the community. "Along with donations from employees, we also were able to purchase items with the money raised from the 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run, during the Soybean Festival in September.," said Sara Thacker, president of the Portageville Jaycees. ...

Portageville receives million dollar class action settlement

The City of Portageville has gotten a very large Christmas present, a bit early this year. A settlement check for more than $1 million arrived at city offices last week. "The city had been involved in a long-standing, class action law suit, since 2012," said Portageville Mayor, Denis McCrate. ...
