60 years ago

SIKESTON - Hospital notes: Mrs. Joseph Broderick of Essex, entered Jan. 25 and a girl was born to her on the same day. Mrs. Early Van Adams of Bell City entered the 27th and a son was born to her on the same day. Mrs. Clarence Lyons of New Madrid entered the 29th and a girl was born to her on the following day. Mrs. O.C. Lewis, entered the 31st and a boy was born to her on the same day.

Feb. 10, 1965

CHARLESTON - A new citizens committee was chosen last night at a meeting at City Hall for the furthering of future plans for the proposed city airport.

MINER - The Sikeston Optimist Club Monopoly Tournament was held Saturday at the Ramada Inn. Six tables of five players each competed during the afternoon session before playing the finals Saturday evening.

SIKESTON - Sixty Sikeston Middle School students participated in the St. Jude Mathathon to help children with cancer. The students went door to door asking for donations for each math problem they worked and raised $3,000. This project was sponsored by Scott Sikes, math teacher, and local pizza restaurants. The top six were: Bethany Beal, sixth place; Heather Jones, fifth place; Whitney Wright, fourth place; Julie Cartwell, third place; Joseph Shuffit, second place; and Jessica Jensen, first place.


SIKESTON - Sikeston Public School students work diligently through the Chapter 1 program to improve their test scores. Specific areas, determined by MMAT scores or other testing choices, are targeted by the curriculum to help students through a difficult subject. Currently, SPS offers remedial reading and remedial math through the program.
