Speakout 3/23

Tuesday, March 23, 2004

I was involved in a traffic accident recently. The accident was not my fault, but a woman was to blame. I tried to explain this to the officer and was given a ticket, which is understandable, and I understand I will have my day in court. The female officer, who may be new on the force, was the rudest person I have ever spoken to. I've known many other female officers who were very kind and professional on their job. I don't know if she was having a bad day or what, but I am 18 and getting ready to graduate from high school. I did vote for the tax increase and I do think Sikeston needs more police officers. But if we're going to have people who are not common people and have no respect for the people in this community, I hope they hire no more people like this woman. I walked away very upset because she had no respect for me as a member of this community. If they're going to hire more people like this, I wish they would get new leadership or something. I respect Drew Juden, but I hope better decisions are made and people like her are not allowed on the force again.

Due to privacy laws, we are not at liberty to use the description of the officer you had in your comment. Have you called DPS to file a complaint?

Why was the National Anthem not played at the basketball games in Sikeston? Is the National Anthem required to be played at ball games? I was at the Sikeston High School gym on March 9 before the game started between Scott Central and Delta girls and it was not played. I also stayed for the game between the Scott Central and Bell City boys and, again, it was not played. I'm sure that the people in charge at Sikeston High School have a real good excuse for this. If they don't, shame, shame, shame on them. If the National Anthem should have been played and they did not play it, the MSHSAA should hear about it and maybe they will do something about it.

To the person commenting on the Clintons getting off "scot free," do you remember a few years back when all the savings and loans were going bust and it was discovered that the big wigs in charge were raking a little off the top? Well, look back in history and you'll discover old Georgie Boy was one of those big wigs. I don't believe he even got his hand slapped. Face it. A politician is a politician - whether Democrat or Republican. They are the biggest liars and thieves and there just isn't much we good guys can do about it.

I have also been a victim of bad repair work. It is very discouraging and very costly. I have had people do repair work on my house and didn't do good work and charged too much money. One person took off with more than $3,000 of my money. I wish I knew someone who would come and do good work at a reasonable price in a reasonable amount of time. I feel bad for people who have had to go through what I have.

There is a place on Broadway that in the past few weeks have had a lot of cars parked there with people working on them. I thought this was a residential area and that they would have to have a license for a junkyard or job. The Code Enforcement people or the police department should do something about this.

Have you contacted Code Enforcement? The number is 471-2512.

With all the new industry going on in this town, why doesn't the City of Miner keep the new intersection at HH Highway off Interstate 55 cleaned up? The same old trash and car parts just lay there for months at a time.

SpeakOut can't help. But you can by registering your complaint with Miner City Hall.

Bad acoustics

I attended the Kenny Rogers Telethon on Saturday. The noise from the band was so loud, I was forced to leave after a few minutes.
