Chaffee baseball falls to Advance

ADVANCE - Advance pitchers Alex Sample and Daryl Wade combined for 15 strikeouts in a six-inning, season-opening victory at home. Sample, a junior right-hander, pitched five innings and accounted for 12 strikeouts. Aaron Abernathy had a triple for Advance (1-0).

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Lee Essner struck out 11 batters and Notre Dame scored six runs in the final three innings to defeat Jackson 8-3 in Monday's high school baseball season opener at Notre Dame Regional High School.

Essner allowed four hits while walking four. He was also 2-for-4 at the plate.

Matt Wulfers went 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs (1-0) with a double, and Blake Urhahn went 2-for-3 with a double. Jason Meystedt took the loss. Derrick Biri hit a home run for Jackson.

FREDERICKTOWN - Alex Armbruster pitched a complete game as St. Vincent debuted with a road win.

Armbruster allowed five hits, fanned 12 and walked two. He also went 2-for-4 with a triple. Teammate Brian Buchheit was also 2-for-4 with two doubles.

ESSEX - Anthony Grojean allowed just one hit and struck out 11 over 5 2/3 innings as Woodland cruised to a road win over Richland.

Scott Crader went 2-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBI's. Matt Upchurch was 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Kent McCormick was 4-for-4 for Woodland (1-0).

SOFTBALL

SCOTT CITY - Scott City pitchers walked 16 batters and hit five more but pulled out a home win over East Prairie. Kacie Cartwright went 3-for-4 with a triple for Scott City (1-0). Kelley Hicks and Erica Kaufmann each went 2-for-4 with a double.

ADVANCE - Chaffee scored five runs in the fifth to defeat Advance on the road. Mindy Hendrix was 2-for-4 with a double for Chaffee (1-0). Dana Williams went 2-for-4 with two triples for Advance (0-1).

ESSEX - Sasha Hutson allowed just one hit as Woodland cruised to a three-inning road victory. Hutson struck out two and walked nine batters.Candice Abner was 3-for-4 with a double for Woodland (1-0).
