SIKESTON - Acting on a petition signed by property owners, the city council authorized the construction of sidewalks on the east side of East Street from Greer to Matthews, the west side of East Street from Matthews to a public alley, and the west side of East Street between Matthews and Kathleen.

Jan. 6, 1968

SIKESTON - Dale Beaird and Don Agnew were named Sikeston District Exposition chairmen for the Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council. Each district will put on its own show with the theme, "A Boy and His World."

JEFFERSON CITY - State Rep. Betty C. Hearnes of Charleston today launched her campaign for governor in a speech that questioned Republican Gov. John Ashcroft's leadership capabilities and record over the past three years. Hearnes said she will develop programs based on the premise "that our shared sense of social responsibility is more powerful than selfishness; that government need not be a problem, but can be a problem solver."

NEW MADRID - During the month of December, three person served as New Madrid County sheriff. Now, with the deadline to file for election to the office just two days away, no candidates have declared an interest in the post.


NEW MADRID - The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles took some revenge for last season's district tournament by defeating the Kennett Lady Indians last night, 76-67. Last year, Kennett won the district by ousting NMCC in overtime. Brandi Jackson scored all of Kennett's points in the extra period, but even her 36 points were not enough last night.
