60 years ago

SIKESTON - A pair of lifelong sweethearts, Judge and Mrs. Frank H. Smith, relived their 50 years of married life Tuesday as friends and relatives gathered to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

SIKESTON - Southwestern Bell and its employees who are affiliated with the Communication Workers of America Local 6513 held a celebration Wednesday at the telephone company in closing their 1965 United Fund drive with 100 percent participation.


CHARLESTON - Construction of a $1.3 million elliptical high school building is to begin here in February 1966. The building is designed for learning rather than teaching according to R.H. Sutherland, president of the Charleston Board of Education. It will accommodate an anticipated maximum enrollment of 1,000 students.

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Former Scott County Circuit Judge Lloyd G. Briggs was sentenced today to three years in prison and fined $5,000 on a federal income tax charge. Briggs, 57, pleaded guilty to tax fraud by falsifying a tax form on Aug. 15 in a plea bargaining agreement. Under the agreement, charges of conspiring to sell cocaine, conspiring to conceal assets and another tax charge were dropped.

SIKESTON - When Pete and Amy Burns say they have a snow village in their living room, they're not kidding. You'd have to see it to believe it. The couple's Original Snow Village features 142 lighted houses and 125 accessories. They literally have a small town in their living room.


JACKSON - Scott County's Jerod Dockins recently earned first place in the 1995 Semo 4-H rodeo finals calf roping event. Finishing second was Ty Ferrell and Jason Duckworth finished third.
