60 years ago

SIKESTON - A railway car on which a drag line had been loaded overturned on the Missouri Pacific tracks in the east part of Sikeston this morning.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - Sikeston contractor Ralph E. Boyer signed a contract with the Caruthersville Housing Authority to serve as the general contractor for 184 low rent housing units. Cost of the project is $1.7 million.

SIKESTON - Gov. Warren E. Hearnes will appear at the Aug. 12 performance of the Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo at 8 p.m. Publicity chairman Mike Jones said ticket sales are approaching the $5,000 mark.

SIKESTON - Alice Aufdenberg, 20, daughter of Mrs. Gene Aufdenberg of Matthews Route 1, was crowned 1987 Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo Queen by Rep. Dennis Ziegenhorn Monday evening at the Kingsway Mall. First runner-up was Leah Belvin, 20, of Matthews and second runner-up was Tory Bloemer of Sikeston.


MORLEY - It is believed that Wayne Hunt and Anthony "Tony" Hunt are the only father and son to serve as officers at the same time since Morley Rotary was founded in 1960. The club also has noted this distinction may be the only father-son office combination in Rotary International.

SIKESTON - Jessica HeiRonimus, daughter of Dan and Linda HeiRonimus of Sikeston, is the Standard-Democrat August Calendar Girl. She is a 1997 graduate of Sikeston Senior High and will be attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City this fall, where she is a freshman enrolled in the medical program.


CHARLESTON - The ante has been upped with the hope of flushing out some answers to who was involved in the Mississippi County Courthouse arson. At a press conference Friday afternoon members of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division were handing out posters asking for any information and announcing the $20,000 reward that has been established.


SIKESTON - The Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo will see 353 contestants entered in events, the most entries ever.
