SIKESTON -- A teenager is in custody following an attempted robbery Thursday at convenience store in Sikeston.

Sikeston Department of Public Safety received a call around 2:30 p.m. Thursday of an attempted robbery at KD's Convenience Store at 903 W. Malone, according to a news release. Several officers and detectives responded to the area as Sikeston communications gave a description of the fleeing suspect.

Two minutes into the call, Det. Bobby Sullivan saw a subject matching the description of the offender near Luther and West North streets. Sullivan detained the subject, who is a 17-year-old Sikeston man, and asked another officer to bring the victim to his location. The victim was able to identify the subject as being the person who tried to rob him.

The victim told DPS he was unloading items to be delivered when the suspect entered the delivery truck with him, acted as if he were armed and demanded money. The delivery man told the suspect that he didn't carry any money on his route. After a brief exchange of words, the suspect fled on foot. The victim watched the suspect run north as he called 911. The suspect was seen getting on a bike and continuing north when Sullivan saw him. After his arrest, the suspect gave Sullivan a full statement explaining what he did.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld pending formal charges, remains in custody at Sikeston DPS.
