Your view: Acton against hunger

Monday, September 15, 2008

This month, food banks and hunger-relief organizations across the country will celebrate Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to fight hunger in every community. One out of every eight people in the United States faces hunger, including 64,000 in Southeast Missouri. Each and every one of them needs our help.

You can be a part of this important initiative. Southeast Missouri Food Bank is inviting you, your family and friends to join us in this nationwide effort. Please come by one of our locations Friday, September 26, between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm to meet the staff, and tour the facilities and see how we help the thousands of people in our community who are struggling with hunger: 3920 Nash Road, Cape Girardeau, MO (next to Jerry Lipps Trucking) or 945 South Kingshighway, Sikeston, MO (by Plaza Tire). Enjoy refreshments and sign up for door prizes while you are there.

The nationwide Hunger Action Month effort is being coordinated by Feeding America, formerly named America's Second Harvest. They're helping food banks in every state to mobilize their communities. And as men, women, and children step up to the plate to help their neighbors, our collective efforts have the potential to bring about monumental change-not just in September, but in the months ahead; not just in Southeast Missouri, but in every town in America.

Please do whatever you can to take action against hunger. Take part in our events, write to your Senators and Representatives about hunger in our community, tell your friends and co-workers about Hunger Action Month, donate food or funds to Southeast Missouri Food Bank, or volunteer at your local food pantry or soup kitchen. Visit www.semofoodbank.org or www.feedingamerica.org or call us at (573)651-0400 or (573)472-0136 to learn more.

We hope you'll join us as we aspire for a hunger-free Southeast Missouri.

Sincerely,

Karen Green
