It was Tip

This is in regards to the Dec. 14 entry about falling gas prices. This person is obviously one of the Republicans that only seem to refer to the Democrat Congress being to blame for all Bush's mess-ups. Ronald Reagan was the greatest president in their eyes? Let's see, did he have a Democratic Congress? Yes, he did. All the great things that Reagan did, it wasn't him, it was Tip O'Neil and the Democratic Congress. This is one thing you Republicans don't want to talk about. All big oil companies have always been backed by the big Republicans. It wasn't Reagan, it was Tip O'Neil.

Detecting for safety

I would like to commend the Charleston school administrators for keeping our children safe during the recent shooting on South Main Street just across from the junior high building. The administrators put the school on lock-down and used their metal detectors the following day. The Charleston school administrators are truly trying to do what is best for our children. I am sorry that I cannot say the same for one board member. I was sitting near him at a recent basketball game. In a loud voic hee said, " I will make sure that metal detectors will not be used in our district because the people in Jackson will not come to our games if we do." I was shocked to hear such a comment. The teachers at the middle and high school, where my children attend, have told me the same thing. They would like to see the metal detectors used, which by the way were purchased with taxpayer funds, but the "Board of Education does not want to offend the people from Jackson because then they will not attend our basketball games." I am sorry, but I don't believe the opinion of the citizens of Jackson, Mo. should outweigh the safety of the children of Charleston Schools.

Dogs don't like Windex

When you place your trash bags out for pickup, spray them with Windex and dogs won't get into them. No joke, it really works.

Songs of cheer

Two of the greatest things I saw this Christmas season was the Christmas concert at the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston and the young kids that put on their little singing concert at the First Baptist Church in Canalou on Dec. 14. Santa and his helpers were really funny. Thanks to all of you who gave me a beautiful day of cheer. You were each awesome in your own way.

Cut out the extras

I was just wondering, everybody that you hear of in this area are losing their jobs. Why don't they start with cutting all the extra money that the farmers get back? They don't need all of that extra money on top of what they make on their grain.

Grab the alcohol

As a result of the recent ice storm that brought a shortage of windshield de-icer, a simple solution is to go to your local pharmacy and buy a bottle of 70 percent solution of rubbing alcohol. Use a spray bottle. You will have the same or better results and you get a bargain!

Sweet Caroline

I'd like to speak to the bureaucrats in Washington or elsewhere that's saying does Caroline Kennedy has the qualifications to be a senator. I feel like that she can do it and she should be given the job because her family has given so much for the United States military in the years that have past. That's all I've got to say.

David does duty

David Jenkins should be summarily dismissed from the Standard Democrat for his public confession to seemingly spending a lot of time observing what teenage girls wear. Even without pursuing the judicial process to its conclusion, it seems that Mr. Jenkins is guilty of blatant lookism.

Yes, I know it is hard to comprehend doing anything else besides making asinine comments in SpeakOut but I feel it is my duty to notice things and write about them as a reporter. Guilty as charged.

Lying liberals

An example of how liberals have lied to rewrite history. Consider Hamilton and Jefferson. Hamilton was the money-man, the guy who wanted a big government to make lots of internal improvements - roads, canals, ports, etc. - because he contended these would benefit commerce. Jefferson, on the other hand, the rural idealist, favored an agrarian nation of small and self-reliant towns knit together as a loose economic confederation within the greater national federation. So the question is, who was the liberal? Obama running on 'change' is nothing more than the another stereotypical liberal like all the others before him for the last 50 years. He like all liberals wants big governmental programs - that's why liberals of that ilk have spent the past 50 years rewriting history, and recast the articulate Jefferson with his insight and wit as one of them. Therefore confusion results as to what is a liberal because of the misapplication of labels. Hamilton is more like the Obama liberals - Hamilton like Obama envisioned reshaping the world using big government controlled corporate power. Jefferson wanted to conserve the rustic nature of the country, with its small town ideals, whose foundations rested on individualism, personal responsibility, and personal freedom from Government intervention. Just one example of hundreds of how the lying liberals have subverted our once strong vibrant free republic.
