A bad fall

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

A 500-foot section of West Malone near South West was closed to traffic for about a half hour Tuesday by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety to provide a landing area for Air Evac. The air ambulance service was called in to transport Donald Blizzard, 56, of Sikeston, who apparently fell from a ladder, although nobody reportedly witnessed the fall. DPS received the call at about 11:34 a.m. "People in the building heard a crash outside and found the gentleman lying on the ground," said Capt. Ken Dicus of the Sikeston DPS. "He was working on the building approximately 9-12 feet in the air." While the landing spot for an air ambulance is always up to the discretion of the pilot, according to Dicus, DPS wanted to provide a place as close to the victim as possible. "That was the most appropriate landing spot we could find," Dicus said. "He was in critical condition and needed the air transport to an appropriate facility. He was airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center."
