Sikeston eighth graders win in OT

Thursday, January 20, 2011

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston eighth grade boys basketball team escaped the Jackson Indians during overtime of their end of the year tournament at Cape Girardeau on Wednesday night with a 29-28 victory.

It took late game heroics by Dominique Dyes, who finished with a team-high 12 points, in the fourth quarter to force the extra quarter. Dyes came up with a steal and zipped down court to knock down a floater in the lane to tie the game at 28 points with just a few seconds remaining.

Zach Jackson, who scored seven points for Sikeston, hit the front side of a one-and-one at the free throw line to give Sikeston the win in overtime and continue their season.

"Jackson defended us a lot better than they have in the past," Sikeston coach Kevin Self said. "We slowed down our scoring in the second half and you can credit that to them. But, I'm proud of our guys for figuring out a way to win in the end."

Sikeston is scheduled to play Poplar Bluff tonight at 6:45 p.m. Although, if weather dictates school closings and cancellations, the tournament will resume on Monday.
