The walls came tumbling down Tuesday on the building which once served as the New Madrid High School, located on Scott Street. Abandoned for a number of years, the building had become a hazard according to City Administrator John Gilbert. The city, with the assistance of the County Highway Department, began the demolition around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and by 3 p.m. much of the structure was down. Gilbert said the steel and metal from the structure will be recovered for scrap and the brick and stone will be ground into chat for use on city streets. The entire structure should be cleared away in about two weeks making way for an enlarged playing field for the town's Little League football program. The cornerstone was saved and will remain on the site marking the school's location, Gilbert said.
