Squirrels, Post 114 earn wins, Tri-Co. eliminated from tourney

CHARLESTON -- Lifted by an early three-run rally Friday, the Charleston Fighting Squirrels took down Crawford County 3-1 to finish pool play undefeated at the Bleacher Bum Invitational.

Doing all their damage in the bottom of the second inning, the Squirrels got RBI's from Jared Walker, Tim Fox and Trey Tigart in the frame to take a 3-0 lead.

Crawford County got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth, but were held scoreless in the seventh as Charleston held on for the win.

Tigart picked up the win on the mound going all seven innings where he allowed one unearned run on eights hits while striking out five.

Charleston was actually outhit on the contest 8-7, but committed only one error to Crawford County's three.

Ryan Fortner and Cord Sheehy led the way with two hits each, including a double by Fortner. Jared Walker and Ian Householder contributed a double and single to the cause respectively.

In taking down Crawford County the Squirrels come on top of Pool A and will face Sikeston American Legion Post 114, who won pool B after defeating Marble Hill 3-2 behind the pitching of Austin Godwin.

Play between Charleston and Sikeston started Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hillhouse Park in Charleston and the championship is scheduled for today at 1 p.m.

STEELE -- After staving off elimination in the South Pemiscot Invitational tournament with an win against Neelyville on Friday the Tri-County baseball team saw a loss to Malden later in the day lead to elimination.

Matched up against Neelyville in the loser's backet after a loss to Halls, Tenn., Tri-County scored nine-runs in the bottom of the fifth en rout to a 10-2 win.

The two team were tied 1-1 at the time of the outburst and Neelville could only respond with one final run in the top of the sixth before the game was called due to the time limit.

Ace Armstrong picked up the win going five innings where he allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out three.

Armstrong, Landon Nolen and Allen Earnheart had two hits, including doubles by both Armstrong and Nolen. Austin Adams had a double and two RBIs with Jordon Pavy contributing a single and two RBIs.

Back on the field later in the day, Malden scored four-unanswered runs late in the game as part of a 6-3 Tri-County loss. Malden took a 2-1 lead after the first frame, but with a two-run rally in the second, Tri-County pulled ahead.

Now at 5-2-1 on the season, Tri-County will travel to Hayti to face their Senior Babe Ruth team Monday at 6 p.m.
