Junior High Basketball

Eighth Grade

CHARLESTON -- One week after rallying from 25 points down to defeat Charleston, Sikeston's eighth grade pulled off another miraculous comeback on Tuesday at Charleston Junior High School.

This time the Bulldog eighth graders found themselves down 14 points in the fourth quarter and still down by nine points with two minutes left, but Sikeston rallied to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Charleston scored the first four points, but Sikeston took control and held on to defeat the Bluejays 85-76.

"This was just an amazing game," Sikeston coach Derek James said. "It looked like there was no way we could come back but this team has such resilience. They just refuse to lose."

Sikeston got a game-high 44 points from Fred Thatch, including 22 in the fourth quarter and overtime. He made his final 13 free throws in the game to finish 16 of 21 on the night.

"That's one of the most dominating performances I've seen in junior high," James said. "Fred seemed to get every single rebound when we had to have it and his will to win just took over. But it wasn't just one player. We had several guys step up and make some huge plays in this game. Austin Branch had a monster 3-pointer in overtime, Bryce Bays had a big, big steal. Keyth Blissett had numerous big plays late in the game. Everybody contributed in this one."

Blissett scored 12 points and Branch added 11.

Charleston was led by Jumonta Moore's 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Kavarri Lee had 20 and James Crane added 18.

"That No. 15 (Moore) was amazing," James said. "We had no answer for him."

Sikeston improves to 6-0 on the season. They will play host to Cape Central tonight at 6 p.m.
