SIKESTON -- While the event may be at a different time of year with different hours, the fight against cancer will be the same during the 19th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Scott County.

In the past the Relay has been held in April, when spring weather is unpredictable and also close to the Kenny Rogers Children's Center Telethon. This year, the Relay will be held on Oct. 25 at the YMCA of Southeast Missouri, giving those a chance who want to take part in both the Telethon and the Relay a better opportunity.

"(Having it in October) is a better fit for those volunteers," said Jessica Sanders, Relay For Life specialist. "The involvement has been similar to the past, but the excitement level is higher. People aren't as overwhelmed."

With the event being in the fall, organizers are also hoping to avoid the rain that pushed last April's Relay inside the YMCA.

"We are hoping for better weather," said Robin Meadows, chair of the Scott County Relay. "In the spring the weather can be bad and we are hoping that isn't a part of it this year."
