DPS investigating homicide

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation into a homicide that took place in the center turn lane on North Main, near College Street Sunday evening.

At 5:40 p.m. Sunday was contacted about a shooting at U.S. 61 North near College Street in Sikeston.

Upon arrival officers found a 31-year-old Sikeston resident, whose name was not released as of press time, shot to death. The victim was still in his vehicle, which was facing northbound in the middle of the roadway.

The major case squad was activated with officers closing the roadway to traffic as they worked the scene during their a homicide investigation.

"Witnesses said the suspect vehicle pulled in front of the victim's vehicle as it was traveling north on US 61, said Capt. James McMillen, public information officer for DPS in a news release. "The suspect(s) shot at the man while stopped in front of him."

The suspects reportedly fled the scene westbound on College Street.

According to McMillen the victim was struck once in the head and died immediately.

Police reopened the area at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to the SEMO Alert site on Facebook, officers are searching for Lakisha Warfield in connection with the homicide. Warfield was last seen driving away from the scene in a black Honda CR-V with Oklahoma plate 951GJH. Warfield is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on Warfield or the homicide is asked to contact Sikeston DPS at 573-471-4711. All tips and information can remain anonymous. Anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender or offenders can be eligible for a cash reward.
