CARUTHERSVILLE -- The Fourth-seeded Portageville Bulldogs lost a semifinal to No. 1 Malden 57-50 during the Bootheel Conference Tournament Thursday at Caruthersville High School.

Portageville has one more game, this Friday at Charleston, before they go into their Class 3A district 1 tournament to be held at New Madrid County Central.

This was the second time that Portageville has played with Malden. The first was at Malden's home gym. Malden won that game, 58-35.

This time, in a neutral location, Portageville did have a better control of the situation, despite the loss, and kept Malden in a much more respectable game. Portageville lost, but only by seven points, 50-57.

In the first quarter, both teams came out hard and eager to win, ending with a 9-9 score. However, with a pair of three pointers in the second quarter, Malden picked up the pace setting the halftime score with a six point lead over the Bulldogs, 21-15.

The Mosby brothers, Kynan and Jaylin, were ready to get the Bulldogs back in the game with each shooting a three pointer in the third period. That did create a little dust in the bulldogs court, but not enough to gain a lead, trailing 32-46.

In the final quarter, the Bulldogs worked hard to splash water on the Greewaves' game plan. Both teams scored 18 points but at the end, Malden came out on top with a seven point lead, 57-50.

In Tuesday's opening round of the Bootheel Conference, Portageville narrowly defeated fifth seed South Pemiscot, 54-52.

No doubt the South Pem. Bulldogs were wanting to seek revenge. These two teams met a few weeks ago with Portageville taking another narrow win, 44-41.

Both Bulldogs teams were evenly matched and it showed in this game. With back and forth scoring during the game, it was in the third frame when South Pemiscot got into foul trouble sending Portageville to the charity stripe. Portageville's Chris Garmon scored 10 of his 16 points in the third frame alone.

Derrick Prioggel and Ian Torrey each scored 11 points.
